The Battle of Evesham in 1265 was the final, pivotal battle of the Second Barons' War, fought in the 1260s between King Henry III and rebellious English barons led by the Earl of Leicester, Simon de Montford. The civil conflict was historically important because it gave birth to the first English Parliament, called by de Montford in 1264, who himself died at the Battle of Evesham. This charming tableau created with toy knights recreates the last moments of de Montford's life on the battlefield as he becomes surrounded by his enemies. The toy knight representing De Montford is the one dressed in yellow and red holding a red and white shield, fighting with another knight in the middle of the scene. The tableau is exhibited in the 'Simon de Montford Room' in The Almonry, a community museum in the town of Evesham, close to where the battle was fought.
