Putnam Competition Winners

The MAA Putnam Competition is a university-level mathematics contest for students in the United States and Canada. Established in 1938 with fewer than 200 participants, the competition has since grown to nearly 4000 including many international students. In 1996, Ioana Dumitriu of Romania was the first woman to be one of the five winners. Melanie Wood of the United States was a winner in 2002, and Ana Caraiani of Romania won in 2003 and 2004. Why has this happened now, finally, in the 21st century? More women mathematics faculty, more women students studying mathematics, and a more inclusive intellectual climate all contribute. These developments are encouraging and have value beyond women succeeding in the Putnam. How many doors all of the women in this poster have opened!
