Camp Nelson's Lone Graveyard No. 1

These are the words carved into the west side of the Camp Nelson Graveyard No. 1 monument:

"African American Refugees

Thousands of African American women and children, most of whom were families of U.S. colored troops, entered Camp Nelson in 1864-65 seeking freedom from slavery."

The better known Camp Nelson National Cemetery for U.S. veterans is down the road.
