Poulton Gala, and old traditions are brought to the fore. This site is the base of a stone cross in Market Square, and these children are the connection to past times that we see today as rather quaint. Over the boy’s shoulder you can see the top of a stone pillar, with its twin to the right of the girl. These are the stocks, another prominent feature of the town, and for those unfamiliar with their purpose, I can reveal they were a means of shaming sundry malcontents by clamping their ankles between two heavy lengths of wood. Would I be the only person prepared to campaign for them to be put back in service? (Just for TV non-celebrities, bankers, politicians, and a certain US president...)
