Black-necked Stilt - Burnaby, BC

Black-necked Stilt - Burnaby, BC

This visit to Burnaby Lake's Piper Spit was a rare treat. Just the day before there were 4 birds working the shallows for food. This day there was only the one juvenile left here at Piper Spit. These birds are the most northern populations breeding in the interior of BC in the Okanagan. This is where the soda lakes are common making the perfect breeding habitat. In the fall they venture to the coast and head south for the winter to California and points beyond.
