Hargeysa (Somaliland/Somalia) - Somaliland Monument

Maybe my favourite monument of Hargeysa (ok, I like maps): A hand holding the map of Somaliland. This de facto state declared its independence in 1991 after the seccession from Somalia, which is still in civil war. Somaliland, however, is rather peaceful and stable, but very fragile. It claims the territory of the former British colony of Somaliland. The governement also controls most of that claimed territory, but in the rural areas, the traditional society with its clans is still more important than the government from Hargeysa. Furthermore, the eastern part of the province Sanaag as well as the whole province Sool are disputed between Somaliland and neighbouring Puntland, another regional state of Somalia. The people there feel more loyal to Puntland (or to any entity), but the Somaliland government remains formally in control of these regions. Still there are a lot of bomb attacks especially in Sool's capital, Laascaanood.
