A Car Passing By A Former Ottoman Empire House By Night, Berbera, Somaliland

BERBERA, SOMALILAND - NOVEMBER 28: a car passing by a former Ottoman empire house by night, there are a lot of Ottoman architecture remains in Somaliland, coming from a former belonging of the area to the Ottoman Empire, Somaliland is a former Somali province that declared independence shortly after the Somali Civil War, in the early 1990’s, but is not internationally recognized yet, on November 28, 2011 in Berbera, Somaliland. Berbera is a seaside city, which has always been a place of sea-related goods trading. It also used to be a strategic place for the commercial path between the Red Sea and India and was a military base for the USSR during the Cold War.
The city architecture features many Ottoman buildings, which reflects the colonial past of the city. Although some people believe that UNESCO should classify these buildings as a World Heritage site, most of them are unpreserved.
Nowadays, Berbera is still the most important seaport in Somaliland, and distributes its products, for example seafood, to the capital Hargeisa, but also to the neighboring parts of Ethiopia. It holds about 100.000 people.
The city surroundings are quite well preserved, with a big coral reef that is becoming a bit of an attraction for scuba-diving lovers. The city itself does not attract many foreigners or tourists, but is effervescent with activity and local traditions.
