A Boy In Front Of A Painted Advertisment Wearing Obama T Shirt, Hargeisa, Somaliland

HARGEISA, SOMALILAND - NOVEMBER 26: a boy in front of a painted advertisment wearing Obama t shirt, Somaliland is a former Somali province that declared independence shortly after the Somali Civil War, in the early 1990’s, but is not internationally recognized yet, on November 26, 2011 in Hargeisa, Somaliland. Hargeisa is the capital of Somaliland and the second-largest city of Somalia. Formerly a part of Somalia, Somaliland claimed its independence in 1991. It has since then functioned fairly well, Somalia not being able to control its territory, but is not internationally recognized as a proper state yet.
Near Hargeisa are located the Las Geel caves, which shelter the most ancient Neolithic paintings known in the Horn of Africa. They were discovered in 2002 by a French archeological team.
Hargeisa has a very specific taste to it: people are very friendly there and the whole town is practically crime-free. On top of that, there are not many cars, and people still wear traditional clothes, while goats and sheep quietly roam the streets.
The city was almost entirely rebuilt from scratch after the 1980’s Civil War destroyed just about the whole town, so most of the infrastructure is recent. Its economy works quite well though, including a very famous livestock market where people bargain for sheep, goats and camels, which are the most produced item in Somaliland.
