Moumin Rashid, whose mother Kadija Hassan says he is not yet 5 years old, waits to be measured with a Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) tape at the Hamar Jajab Health Center in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017. The examination found that the circumference of Moumin's arm is under 11cm, meaning that he is exhibiting signs of severe malnutrition. The 2017 post-Gu seasonal assessment found that in June and July some 388,000 children under five years of age were malnourished (including 87,000 who were severely malnourished) and were in need of urgent medical care due to high risk of disease and death. In some areas, more than 30 percent of children under age five were malnourished – surpassing the threshold for an emergency.
