A Teenage Girl Outside Her Slum Hut, Baligubadle, Somaliland

BALIGUBADLE, SOMALILAND - DECEMBER 09: a teenage girl outside her slum hut, traditionally women in Somaliland wear colorful headscarves called hijab and paint their hands with henna, Somaliland is a former Somali province that declared independence shortly after the Somali Civil War, in the early 1990’s, but is not internationally recognized yet, on December 9, 2011 in Baligubadle, Somaliland. Most of the women in Somaliland wear a colorful scarf (Hijab) to cover their hair and a long dress. However few chose to wear the burquà, a long head-to-toe dress also covering the face. Most marriages are arranged by the families in Somaliland, and happen between clan members. This tradition is though being questioned by the uprising of romantic marriages, a sign of social changes.
There is a lot of henna art in Somaliland. Henna is a plant that grows in the area and from which people take leaves to dry them. They are then reduced to powder and mixed with water to create a paste. Henna paste colors skin and hair a red-brown color. It is usually used to make complicated temporary tattoos on the hands and feey for joyful occasions, such as weddings or religious holidays.
Women in Somaliland also use a traditional cosmetic called quasil. It is a paste made from the grinded leaves of a tree, which is applied onto the face and helps rejuvenate it and protect it from the sun. Quasil gives the skin a yellow color that contrasts whith their traditional colorful dresses.
