Northern Karongi in Rwanda used to be a high-risk area for people, but restoration turned it into a green mountain. Terraces successfully reduce soil loss through enhanced retention and runoff infiltration, to promote permanent agriculture on steep slopes and to promote land consolidation and intensive land use. This was done by community-based initiative called Umuganda which is a culture of mutual help and cooperation between families, friends and neighbours.
