Autoparco X - The Necropolis of the “Via Triumphalis”

Autoparco X - The Necropolis of the “Via Triumphalis”

The columbarium 12 was built in early 2nd century AD. A small door with a travertine threshold allows the access to the chamber. The chamber has small dimensions, and the door was used just for leaning inside the chamber during the funeral rites. Two rows of niches, each with two jars walled inside, were opened on the sidewalls. On the back wall there have been opened two larger niches placed one above the other, each including a single jar.
The back wall offers an idea of the ancient decoration of the room. A fresco painted on the white plaster, covers the walls. Red lines divide the back wall in two framed areas. The surfaces are decorated with two thin red candelabra, and two birds are perching on them. The structure of the candelabra placed symmetrically respect to the central niches, is rendered by means of intertwined branches.
