Painted skimmer (Libellula semifasciata) - foty - new!

I didn't expect to see a skimmer on the first day that dragonflies were flying, nor as I was wrapping up my walk. But there he was perching on the far side of a small pool in a cattail slough. He moved to perch facing me but still a few feet away. So, I quickly stuck a couple of tall sticks in the muck next to me - and suddenly there he was perched beneath me, spreading his wings in the warm sun! I have seen Painted skimmers in March - but they've gotten scarcer and I'm lucky to see some by early Summer. Their orange-red color is unique.

Pine pollen has started - you can see he's covered!
