BIOGRAPHY

Xana was born in Lisbon in 1959 and graduated in Fine Arts from Escola Superior de Belas-Artes, Lisbon, in 1984, the year he took up residence in Lagos, in the Algarve. He co-authored the project for a Graduation Degree in Visual Arts at the University of Algarve, where he is a visiting professor since 2004.

Since 1981, as a visual artist, he has presented several exhibitions, set designs and interventions in public spaces. In 2005, at Culturgest, in Lisbon, he presented a selection of his works entitled: ‘Arte Opaca e Outros Fantasmas’.

He participated in numerous collective exhibitions in Portugal, among which the various group exhibitions by Homeostética, a group that was the subject of a retrospective in 2004, at the Museu de Serralves.

On the international level, are of special note: the participation in the Portuguese representation at the Venice Biennale, in 1986; the exhibition ‘Tradición, Vangarda’ and ‘Modernidade do Século XX Português’, Auditório de Galicia, Santiago de Compostela, in 1993; the 40e Salon de Montrouge, France, 1993; and the exhibition ‘Colecção António Cachola – arte portuguesa anos 80-90, MEIAC of Badajoz, in 2000.
Over the past five years, he has focused his artistic work in the creation of public art installations or temporary constructions. In this context, are of note: the construction, in 2009, of a large Triumphal Arch in Paseo de Gràcia in Barcelona. In 2010, in the gardens of Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, the installation ‘Assembleia’, integrated into the exhibition ‘Res Publica’. From February to June 2012, the installation ‘Nova Assembleia e algumas próteses" was presented at the Museu do Chiado.

In 2013 created the "Love Libera Lux" installation under the "Vincent '13" initiative in Belém, Lisbon.

Sculptural intervention ‘Uma Casa no Céu’, during the spring and summer of 2012, at the Parque de Escultura Contemporânea Almourol, Vila Nova da Barquinha.

Xana is represented in many museums and public collections, including: Museu de Serralves, in Porto; Künstlerhaus-Musonturm, in Frankfurt; Fundação Luso-Americana, Centro de Arte Moderna – Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and Colecção de Arte da Fundação EDP, in Lisbon.
