Pencil slate urchin detail - Phyllacanthus parvispinus

The pencil slate urchin has two types of spines; the long primary ones are used for walking about and wedging into cracks when there is strong water movement, and they get eroded so they look like pencils. The secondary spines are small flat spines around the base of the primary spines as you can see in this photo.
