Cataloochee Valley Elk Herd

Cataloochee Valley Elk Herd

The dominate bull elk of the GSMNP’s Cataloochee herd rests and watches from the middle of his harem as the sun slowly burns off the early morning fog. Actually, he was only watching over about half of his harem because there were about as many cows still in the woods as were out in the field. For the past hour we had been watching what looked like elk ghosts wandering through thick fog and were glad to see the fog finally burn away.
