Parriott Mesa Guarding the Entrance into Castle Valley

I'd seen this mesa on the drive to this area mainly because of ravens I'd noticed soaring up and around this valley. This mesa definitely stands tall and is appropriate in thinking of it as the guardian to the valley heading south to the La Sal Mountains. While most of my attention at this location was on Castleton Tower, the way the afternoon sunlight brought out the varying hues of reds and browns across the cliff face and then the others caught in shadows from a nearby canyon wall...the colors stood out. That's what I wanted to capture with this image. I worked with some control points and color control points in Capture NX2 to bring out most of the look I'd wanted but it was added a Polarization (for the blue skies) and a reverse Graduated Neutral Density CEP filter that really brought out the look for this final image. The color contrasts with the reds and browns really came out agains the blues of the skies above.
