THE MARKS OF THE EMPIRE - UNION SQUARE, TIMIȘOARA

Unirii (Union) Square is the largest and most elegant square of the old, once walled part of Timișoara - the Cetate (Fortress) District. The square was created soon after the eliberation of Timișoara and of Banat from the Turkish rule by the Austrian imperial army in 1716. It was meant to be the new core of the city and to give it a new identity in the spirit of tolerance and fraternity, with the symbolical placement of the Catholic (1736-1774) and Orthodox (1745-1748) cathedrals on one and another of the small sides of the square. Amazingly, though the Catholic Germans and Hungarians were the ruling class in Banat, they displayed modesty by placing the Catholic Cathedral laterally, not on the main axis of the square, as is placed the Orthodox Cathedral (initially serving both Romanians and Serbs, now only the Serbs). Since then, this spirit of acceptance has became Timișoara's dominant philosophy, making from this multi-ethnic and multi-religious city one of the most emancipated in Modern era Europe (18-19th centuries).

In photo we see the basis of the sculptural ensamble in the middle of the square. It is called "Plague's Column" and was erected in 1740-1756 to commemorate a devastating epidemy in Banat in 1731-1738.

Beyond the monument, on the main side of the square, we can see two of Timișoara's most representative buildings. The Baroque Palace erected in 1733 as headquarters of the Mining Office, between 1775-1944 hosting the Prefecture of Timiș County and from 1986 housing the Art Museum of Timișoara.

The Brück House, Timișoara's oldest and finest drugstore - the building seen right behind the sculptural ensamble - dates in present form from 1910, being built in Szeceszió style. Previously, another drugstore existed here since 1758.
