This mask was made on a human skull encrusted with shells and pyrite in the orbits. Sometimes sacrificial knives were embedded in the nasal or oral cavities. Some of the holes around the skull were thought to have been so hair or other similar element could be placed inside as the deities of death and the underworld were symbolized by having curly hair.
