The spectacular 1952 Paramount Pictures film, "The Greatest Show on Earth," won the Oscar and the Golden Globe for Best Picture. The lavish behind-the-scenes circus drama was directed and narrated by Cecil B. DeMille (August 12, 1881 - January 21, 1959), and co-starred Betty Hutton (February 26, 1921 - March 11, 2007), Charlton Heston (October 4, 1923 - April 5, 2008), Gloria Grahame (November 28, 1923 - October 5, 1981), Cornel Wilde (October 13, 1912 - October 16, 1989), Dorothy Lamour (December 19, 1914 - September 22, 1996), and Jimmy Stewart (May 20, 1908 - July 2, 1997). Hundreds of other cast members were Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus performers, including legendary circus clown Emmett Kelly (December 9, 1898 - March 28, 1979) who appeared as himself dressed as his sad-face hobo character "Weary Willie."

Synopsis and storyline, via IMDb:
The dramatic lives of trapeze artists, a clown, and an elephant trainer against a background of circus spectacle.

To ensure a full profitable season, circus manager Brad Braden engages The Great Sebastian, though this moves his girlfriend Holly from her hard-won center trapeze spot. Holly and Sebastian begin a dangerous one-upmanship duel in the ring, while he pursues her on the ground. Subplots involve the secret past of Buttons the Clown and the efforts of racketeers to move in on the game concessions.
