Ruprechtskirche (Vienna)

Ruprechtskirche (Vienna)

The Roman Catholic Ruprechtskirche is the oldest church of the city of Vienna still existing in its basic substance. It is located on the Ruprechtsplatz in the 1st district of Vienna Innere Stadt. The Ruprechtskirche is dedicated to St. Rupert, the patron saint of salt miners and Salzburg, and is therefore regarded as the Salzburg Foundation. Salt was an important monopoly in the Middle Ages, administered by a special office, the Salzamt. In the Ruprechtskirche salt was sold by the Salzamt to retailers - this is also recalled by the field names Salzgasse, Salzgries, Salztorgasse and the Salztorbrücke.
