An internally displaced woman in Somalia receives food
An aid worker provides food to an internally displaced family Nuur Mother and Child Health and Nutrition centre in Hargeisa, Somalia on April 6, 2017. With USAID Office of Food for Peace support, WFP is implementing a Mother and Child Health and Nutrition programme to prevent both acute and chronic malnutrition in children under the age of two years, reaching close to 44,000 vulnerable mothers and their children every month.
Approximately 6.2 million people—half of the total population in Somalia—are currently in urgent need of humanitarian assistance as a result of the combined effects of drought, poor harvests, ongoing conflict, and high levels of malnutrition. In early 2017, the United States rapidly scaled up humanitarian response efforts. With U.S. support, the international community is now reaching more than 3 million people each month with lifesaving aid. Credit: Karel Prinsloo, WFP
