Lead Belly (Huddie William Ledbetter) was born on a plantation in Louisiana in 1889 and died in New York City in 1949. He was a well-known American Blues musician who is noted as being one of the founders of the genre. He played multiple instruments but was most well-known for his performances on 12-string guitar. In his early career in the 1910's he was a contemporary in the Deep Ellum district of Dallas, Texas, with Blind Lemon Jefferson (1893-1929) where they performed together frequently, including one of Lead Belly's more noted songs called "The Titanic" about champion African American boxer Jack Johnson, who was allegedly denied entrance to the ship's maiden voyage because he was black.

"It was a midnight on the sea,
The band was playing, "Nearer my God to Thee,"
Fare thee, Titanic, Fare thee well!

Titanic when it got its load,
Captain, he hollered "all aboard!"
Fare thee, Titanic, Fare thee well!

Titanic was comin' 'round the curve,
when it run into that great big iceberg,
Fare thee, Titanic, fare thee well!

Titanic was sinkin' down,
Had them lifeboats around,
Fare thee, Titanic, fare thee well!

Had them lifeboats around
Savin' the women and children lettin' the men go down,
Fare thee, Titanic, fare thee well!

Jack Johnson want to get on board,
Captain he says, "I ain't haulin' no coal!"
Fare thee, Titanic, fare thee well!"

Lead Belly did multiple stents in prison for violent crimes but nevertheless was able to achieve musical notoriety in America and Europe (the first Blues musician to do so). He had a regular radio broadcast on WNYC in New York and spent time traveling across the country playing his music. He died in New York City in 1949.
