Mysterious engravings on tree trunk

If the provenance were different, I bet I could convince you that these are the work of some skilled indigenous carver—as they are, but the carver is a bunch of beetle larvae chewing their way along under the bark of the tree. Highly damaging to the tree, and some species of beetle also disseminate tree diseases such as the fungus that causes Dutch Elm Disease.

Which must make my fascination with these patterns a morbid one, I suppose. Woodpeckers also like these larvae, for more practical reasons.
