Kamo shrine, 2017 Nov. 2 at Naka-shinjo near Sabae-city

The clear light of this fine afternoon shines strongly on the tree-covered mount topped by the ancient Shinto shrine, Kamo Jinja. Houses crowd, cheek by jowl, all around the base of the rise. Less than 50 meters to the north and east of the mount is the modest stream of the Asozu River, moving slowly west and north to meet the Hino River and travel out to the Japan Sea together.

The foreground field has been harvested of its rice, but the one on the opposite side of the road is still ripening with its buckwheat, soon to be harvested to make soba (noodles).
