Winners and losers: What fiscal tools can make fisheries work for people and the environment?

This IIED poster calls for the introduction of tax policies to make fisheries more sustainable.

The poster highlights the importance of the ocean to all life: delivering oxygen, regulating the climate and providing food for millions of people. It says the ocean is under threat from pollution, warming and industrial activity which poses risks to marine life.

The poster says governments, communities and business should to work together for change. It calls for inclusive tax policies to be introduced at national and international level, with the benefits being fairly distributed. The poster also calls for efficient tax collection to reward good practice, not bad.

IIED has also released an animation which explains how fiscal tools such as taxes, penalties and subsidies can support the health of the ocean and protect the livelihoods of people who depend on it. You can watch this animation on our Youtube channel

The poster is part of IIED's work on improving ocean governance and supporting sustainable fisheries. Read more: Moving towards an inclusive blue economy
