triangular strip of roadside land for vegetables and flowers

One of the paths up to the top of Mt. Atago begins here. Immediately west of the path is this patch of garden at the space between the mountain slope and the paved road. On this national holiday morning, November 3, the most prominent crop at the middle of the photo is the daikon (Japanese radish), with a single row of onion or leek in front of that daikon section. Hanging from the lowest branch of the tree are 2 large black plastic balls or floats, presumably meant to frighten birds that might want to feast on the produce. Beyond the tree are a few clear plastic bags of rice chaff that may be applied to the soil. Sometimes it is burned to allow the ash to amend the soil.

Across the road is a small section of greenhouse (plastic veneer house, as they call it in Japanese) and adjacent patch of vegetable sectioned off from the surrounding paddy field.
