streetside trees trimmed for winter

The untrimmed summer growth on the city street trees can be seen along the right-hand side of the photo; the freshly barbered trees stand on the left side. There is a kind of coppice effect in this annual fall cutting back. The next spring the life from the roots rises up and issues even more shade on the twigs and branches that form, resulting in denser leave cover. The bonsai effect comes from topping the tree at the desired height to keep it compact and less likely to suffer from strong wind, or the damage of ice storms. In this photo the tree trimmer can be seen along the lefthand side of the road in the middle distance.
