detail of Journey - Valois Tapestries

Detail of Journey, one of the Valois Tapestries, on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

None of the tapestries is formally named. This one is known as Départ de la Cour du château d'Anet and as Journey. Measuring 154 by 210 inches,] this tapestry depicts the royal court departing the Château d'Anet. The date is unknown, although it may represent the departure of King Henry III for Poland in 1973. Many of the figures depicted are not identified, or so uniquely depicted that identification is very difficult. It is likely that Catherine de' Medici is depicted riding in the litter, while King Charles IX rides a horse at the head of the retinue.

This detail shows how metal-wrapped threads were used to create bas-relief type highlights in the dress and accentuate items the de' Medicis felt were important (like their luxurious clothing).
