detail of Fontainebleau - Valois Tapestries
Detail of Fontainebleau, one of the Valois Tapestries, on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.
Attaque de Vue devant le château de Fontainebleau, also known as Fontainebleau, depicts a mock battle held in late June 1565 in the city of Bayonne, France, as part of the celebrations that occurred at the end of the 18-month progress around France by the young King Charles IX and Catherine de' Medici.
This detail shows how metal-wrapped threads were used to create bas-relief type highlights in the dress and accentuate items the de' Medicis felt were important (like their luxurious clothing).
