detail of Elephant - Valois Tapestries

Detail of Elephant, one of the Valois Tapestries, on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

None of the tapestries is formally named. This one is known as Mascarade à l'éléphant, or Elephant. Measuring 152 by 252 inches, this tapestry depicts a partially animated artificial elephant being attacked by members of the royal family and court. The ballet de cour depicted is of uncertain date and location. Prominantly depicted are King Henry III, Margaret of Valois, and Francis, Duke of Anjou.
