Two children and lion statue, "The Ridge", near Wotton-under-Edge by [Charles Meredith?] Penly (early 1870s)

Two children and lion statue,

Carte de visite.

Studio of Penly, Photographic Artist, Wotton-under-Edge.

Bought from an eBay seller in Old Kilpatrick, Dunbartonshire, Scotland.

The photographer is possibly William Dee Penly (died 1892), who established the Elephant Works fireworks factory in Wotton-under-Edge circa 1851, or his son Charles Meredith Penly (1850-1925). Charles' son, also named Charles Meredith (c.1895-1928), was killed in a fireworks explosion which destroyed the factory in 1928. - &pid=1 [dates, of course, may be unreliable].

In 1870, a C. Penly was wanting to exchange a cornet for a camera, so Charles would seem the likely candidate.

I imagine the lion is in the grounds of a large country house in the vicinity of Wotton-under-Edge? [UPDATE 31/05/2016: Identified as "The Ridge", near Wotton-under-Edge, now demolished. See comments.]
