As I began to work in my yard this morning, I noticed this beautiful Monarch butterfly lying dormant (I hoped!) from the cold. It was a lucky thing that I saw it, as it was just outside the door to the shed, and if I hadn't seen it I might have accidentally stepped on it.
The population of Monarch butterflies is in crisis and collapse - a recent study estimated that the number of Monarchs spending the winter in California may be only one sixth of the number that were here 20 years ago. See:
