Years ago I "invented" a foul-proof method of getting the correct exposure with your digital camera without relying on your camera's light meter. All you need to do is take a photo of your shadow, if the shadow if black and shows no detail but the ground is detailed, you have underexposed, whereas if the shadow shows lots of detail but the ground around it is washed out and white you have overexposed. When both the shadow and ground show detail the exposure is "just right"
