The chunk of jade in the foreground is due to be taken up for carving

While the artisan in the Museum of Jade jade factory already has two objects on his plate, one he is currently working on and one already with the outline drawnig on it, the chunk of jade in the foreground is due to be taken up for carving after that. This seems to be a statue of the Boodai, or what the world calls the Laughing Buddha, a Taoist figure. Jade mining is done from large boulders that contain bountiful deposits of jade. Jade is exposed using diamond-tipped core drills in order to extract samples. This is done to ensure that the jade meets requirements. Hydraulic spreaders are then inserted into cleavage points in the rock so that the jade can be broken away. In parts of China, small pieces of jade are also collected from a river bank- it calls for much experience as it is very easy to confuse jade with smooth and rounded ordinary pebbles. As metal-working technologies became available, the beauty of jade made it valuable for making ornaments and decorative objects. (Chiang Mai, north Thailand, Oct. 2018)
