Fayette

Fayette

In the fall of 1978, my sister climbed into her brand-new Chevette for a vacation in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. When she reported she'd found a ghost town, we--well, let's say we didn't imagine it correctly.

Fayette State Park's an abandoned iron community (company town) on the north end of Lake Michigan. (I've discussed this before.) Debbie bringing the town to my attention had a significant impact on my life, in ways I've also discussed elsewhere. Even today much of what I read reflects my abiding interest in Fayette, which evolved into a more general interest in 19th century iron and steel production.

Unknown (to me) camera, though Debbie may well recall. Scanned from an Ektachrome slide.
