Citizenship for Bantu Somalis?
25/06/2003 11:17 - (SA)

Dar es Salaam - Tanzania will consider granting citizenship to thousands of Somali Bantu refugees settled in the country's eastern coastal region of Tanga, a minister told parliament on Tuesday night.

"The refugees are welcome to apply for citizenship," deputy home affairs minister John Chiligati told parliament in the country's administrative capital, Dodoma, about 450km west of the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.

The Tanzanian government had earlier this year allowed about 3 200 Somalis to settle in a 2 040ha piece of land in Chogo, where their ancestors are believed to have come from about 300 years ago.

Chiligati said the refugees, who had fled to Tanzania following the collapse of the Somali regime of dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, had been given special treatment by being hosted in Tanga, because their origin was traced to the Wazigua tribe.

The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has already built a health centre, schools, playgrounds, shops, markets, water points and a police post at Chogo, for an estimated cost of $2m.

UNHCR and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) launched a large-scale plan to resettle Somali Bantus, who have claimed to suffer discrimination at the hands of other Somalis.

More than 12 000 Somali Bantu refugees in neighbouring Kenya were transferred to a transit camp on the last stop before they are to be resettled in the United States.
