you know we don't teach our Mother tangues in schools and it is natural to find many people wh ohave no idea about how our languages function or whether there are grammatical rules or not!
I think there are a lot of boys and girls over there in Djibouti or in Diaspora who would like to know something about their language. We have been also given the opportunity to communicate with them through Djibnet Forums. So here is a little bit of Somali Grammar.

it is about demonstratives.

Singular
Masculine

Kan. (This). Example:Kani waa Cali (This is Ali)
Keer. (That but not far). EX: Keeri waa Axmad (That is Ahmed).
Kaas. (That in a remote distance). Ex: Kaasi waa Cumar. (That is Omar).

Feminine

Tan (this) Example: Tani waa Maryan (This is Maryan).
Teer (That but not far) Teeri Cawo (That is Awo!)
Taas(that in a remote distance). Teeri waa Sagal (That is Sagal).

Plural.(For Msculine and feminine).

Kuwan (these)
Kuweer (Those but not too far).
Kuwaas (Those but a bit far).

They are contracted when used with definite articles and because of this, they become “an” or “n”

Here most important definite articles in Somali language;

For masculine common nouns (singular)

-ka. Example: Ninka (the man).
-ga. guriga. (The house).
-a. libaaxa. (The lion).

For feminine common nouns (Singular).

-ta. Gacanta. (The hand).
-da. Laxda. (the ewe).
-sha. Bisha. (The month). Bisha comes from “Bil” (A month) and the “L” omitted by most grammarians.

We notice that these articles are added to the end of a word like suffixes in English or French.

A demonstrative adjective comes after the word that it modifies. And then it is contracted with it.

look at the following examples;

Ninka kan = ninkaan(Ka + an from kan). This man. (In Djibouti we often say “Ninkan or nikan” which is informal but correct…).

Guriga kan = gurigaan or gurigan. This house.
Libaaxa kan = libaaxaan or libaaxan. This lion.
Gacanta tan = gacantaan or gacantan. This hand.
Bisha tan = bishaan or bishan. This month.

P.S

There is no indefinite article in Somali. We call this “Zero article”
Examples:

Far (A finger). Farta (The finger).
Waji (A face). Wajiga (The face).

thanks for your encouragement, saaxiib. it is my duty to teach and protect our mother tongue (I hope that other friends do the same for Afar language). I feel that without this language and all that heritage that it represents, we will be nobody! so don't worry it is OK and more than enough if one djibnaut or a guest reads this 'cause that is my reward. Another thing is that is a five-year research that I've it in a drawer for a long period of time and I think it is high time to make it come to light here on Djibnet.com.

In this example, the verb FUR is in the imperative form. Most of grammarians say this is also the base or stem (radical) of all verbs. I mean the imperative form is used as an infitive in Somali grammar. And then we add endings (Astaamaha falka) to show the tense (time).

Examples :

Anigu waan furayaa ilbaalka.
Adigu waad furaysaa…
Isagu wuu furayaa.
Iyadu way furaysaa.
Annagu waan furaynaa.
Adinku waad furaysaan
Iyagu way furayaan.

The action takes places now at this moment.

Some grammarians believe that the words: Waan, Waad, wuu, way are bound pronouns. it means they always come before the verbs; they cannot be omitted.

Tu as raison king(1),les adverbes et les prépositions en somali (Maleyyayaal).
Maleyye qumman et maleyye qummanaynmais je saurais t'expliquer lequels de deux qui est prépositions ou adverbes.

En comparant mon 1er ecrit sur le (maleyye qumman) a mon second(maleyye qummanayn) c'est confus.

Maleyye qummanaynEX:(hor,dhinac,ag,dabo,kor,hoos...)

Waxa i soo hor martay Meu .
King1 baa dhinac fadhiya.
Warsama ina ag jooga
Waan idin daba socda
Aqalka ayuu ARREH u kor baxay.
Ku maa hoos galay sarriita?

Comme la préposition le maleyye qummanayn indique qu'il y a rapport particulier entre deux mots selon les circontances.

Peut etre que le maleyye qumman(ka,ku,la,soo,sii) est un adverbe de liaison.

Franchement c'est difficile de comprendre .

Hi there!

These are basic rules of how to conjugate verbs in Somali Grammar. There is always one problem; we often try to apply grammatical rules of Latin Language to Somali (as the case is in English!). It is sometimes difficult or maybe impossible to find that sort of eight parts of speech (Noun, pronoun, adjective, verbs, adverds, prepositions,…) in our language. For example, the pronoun “I” in English can be translated into Somali by saying “Ani or aniga” but the question is why there is a definite article in “Aniga!”. In other words, “Ani (+ga)” has to be a noun!….

Present tense (Habitual action).

Anigu waan furaa ilbaabka had iyo jeer (I always open the door)
Adigu waad furtaa ilbaabka…
Isagu wuu furaa…
Iyadu way furtaa…
Annagu waan furnaa…
Idinku waad furtaan…
Iyagu way furaan…

Past tense (Action took place in the past)

Anigu waan furay ilbabka.
Adigu waad furtay ….
Isagu wuu furay..
Iyadu way furtay…
Annagu waan furnay…
Idinku waad furteen…

To form the future tense, we add the suffix “-doon) to the verb; fur (i) + doon + aa…etc
Anigu waan furidoonaa ilbaabka.
Adigu waad furidoontaa…
Isagu wuu furidoonaa…
Iyadu way furidoontaa…
Annagu waan furidoonnaa…
Idinku waad furidoontaan (furidoontiin)…
Iyagu way furidoonaan.

a) The ‘.i.” in “Furidoonaa” is just for the pronunciation (Phonetics).
