Hello Everybody,

Last few month that I have in Djibouti, i couldnt help but notice the huge effort of constructions that have been carryed out by the gouvernemnt and its partners.

Indeed, junctions, roads, Markets have been cleaned and made over in a way to appeal the potential investors coming after this Holly Month.

I dont need to mention that the Kempinski Palace Hotel is almost done. it proudly faces the sea besides the DP world and what was once called the Plage du heron.

The free Zone once complete is supposed to host 100 different companies that have their regional headquarters in Dubai.

Kempinski Hotel has now recruted over 100 djiboutians and has already started their training.

2 more banks have opened in town, Saba Islamic Bank(yemen) and International Commercial Bank(malaysia).

Everything is arranged to suit the eyes of investors.

Billions of dollars have been invested by both Dubai and Qatar to support this effort.

However, in the ghettos nothing have changed. People are still living their miserable life. Packed in the shacks, local people have no idea on what is going on.

Even worst, there has been no impact on their lives so far, no impact on jobs or income.

What happened is that the upper part of the society has benefited on both Job Opportunities and Income.

Further social and economical impacts will still have to witnessed.

Despite all of that i cant help but hope for a brighter future for Djibouti. At least for some of us....

I totally agree wit u djib_extrem that not only the comesa thing will help the rich people but also widen the gap between the rich and poor without mentioning that middle-income class is goin out of the picture...

but let's face what this comesa thing will bring for Djibouti? Prosperity, equality, development......WRONG?

I think that this comesa thing will harm us, djiboutian, even further and we may end up in a civil war where everybody wants to get its part of the cake..but let's say that it works and comesa is here.

for those who are not aware comesa will eliminate all imports barriers namely tax, quotas etc...pls do someone remind me that djibouti produces something and WE export...none...Djibouti's economy lives wit donation, rent(US and French camp) and mostly, i let u guess, TAX...imports going to our neighbour countries are subjected to TAX in the port and it is considered an important revenue for the govt...without tax, i sincerely hope that djibouti's economy will live longer...

Now let's mention what comesa can do? Without barriers we will find everything that is produced in our neighbour countries and our shops and Malls (do we have that sorry) will have many kinds of stuffs. people will say that job will be created!!! yes jobs will be created but do u think that firms will pay higher wage? they rather bring wit them their pakistani or bengaly friends to work in djib with half of wat is supposed to be paid to the VAILLANT DJIBOUTIAN...

frankly speaking i just hope that better days is ahead and i wish that many will realise that comesa has its advantages and disadvantages. But for now on, let's celebrate COMESA...COMESA...i kinda feel already that 4 Mars is preparing songs for comesa...loooollllllllll.

peace
